Behind the Scene: A conversation with Dr. Batia Cohen, Author of Shura

Join Dr. Batia Cohen for a conversation about Shura, a historical novel chronicling the life of Holocaust survivor Szifra (Shura) Pupko. A secret discovered in adolescence sets the story in motion and shapes the course of her life. During WWII, she leaps from a train bound for Majdanek and finds refuge with the Bielski partisans. After the war, she rebuilds her life in Mexico.

Dr. Cohen will discuss her research and interviews with survivors, the book’s ties to the Bielski Brothers (depicted in the film Defiance starring Daniel Craig), and the ethical challenges of rendering testimony into narrative.

A short reading will be followed by audience Q&A.

This event is sponsored by Boston3G, 3GPhilly, 3GNJ and 3JNY.

It Didn't Start With You: Breaking the Cycle of 3G Overfunctioning

How does intergenerational trauma physically show up in our bodies, and why do we often feel a constant drive to "over-function" for those who came before us?

Join 3GPhilly as Clinical psychologist and 3G, Dr. Sam Wertheimer explores the biological correlates of inherited trauma and its specific impact on 3G mental health and parenting. This session offers practical somatic tools to help you navigate a nervous system that feels "on fire" and move past the guilt of a history that didn't start with you.

3G Philly Virtual Event Series - How am I supposed to live?: Freedom, Responsibility, and the New Urgency of Being 3G

For our next conversation, we turn to Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s profoundly honest reflection in The New York Times about being a 3G — particularly her searing question: “How am I supposed to live? That’s my real question, maybe my only one.”

This event, facilitated by Jewish educator and third-generation holocaust survivor Jen Anolik, centers the Third Generation's dilemma: How do we reconcile the freedom and joy that our grandparents' survival afforded us with the profound responsibility to continue their legacy? We will explore the internal conflict of enjoying life fully while simultaneously carrying the weight of the past—especially at a time when the echoes of the past have grown louder and more urgent than ever post-October 7th.  Join 3GPhilly to share your thoughts on what it truly means to live a meaningful, unapologetically full life after the Holocaust, finding strength and community in this shared journey.

This event is free - donations are appreciated!

Book Release and Author Talk with Anne Hand
Tuesday, October 21, 2025
8:00pm ET
On Zoom

Austrian Again simultaneously explores the bureaucracy of obtaining reparation citizenship and the emotional toll this has on descendants of survivors who seek it. Join 3GNY and 3G Philly as author Anne Hand sits with fellow Austrian 3G descendants, Meghan Stevenson-Krausz and Cindy Silverman, for an intimate conversation about citizenship, heritage, legacy, and what it means to discover your roots as a 3G.

About Austrian Again

In this captivating memoir, the author embarks on a deeply personal journey to uncover her family's hidden history during the Holocaust while pursuing Austrian citizenship. As Austria opens the door to reparation citizenship for descendants of those victimized by the Nazi and Austrofascist regimes, Anne digs through fragments of family stories and documents to trace her Austrian and Czechoslovakian roots. Through her search, she pieces together the story her ancestors withheld from their children after World War II, while reflecting on identity, migration, and heritage.

About Anne

Anne Hand was born in 1985 in New York. Her grandmother was a librarian, and she grew up attached to the power of the written word. Her love of books and the worlds they transported her to have always fueled her desire to make change in the world. Anne has spent her career blending research, policy, and practice to create social impact across the Americas and beyond. She is a recognized expert in global education and development, publishing on topics related to technology and social impact. She holds a BSc. from McGill University and an Ed.M. from Harvard University. Austrian Again is her first book.

Austrian Again by Anne Hand will be available October 20. Pre-order your copy here:
